The first National Park was Yellowstone National Park created by an act of Congress during the Grant Administration in 1872. The National Parks Service was created in 1916 during the Wilson Administration to oversee 12 Parks at that time. Since then, the Park Service has grown to oversee 58 National Parks and 333 other units comprised of National Monuments, Memorials, Historical Parks, Historic Sites, Scenic Trails and other properties. These areas now encompass more than 84 million acres containing 21 thousand buildings, 17 thousand miles of trails, and 10 thousand miles of roadway. The NPS has over 20 thousand employees both seasonal and part-time. The National Park System also hosts almost 300 million visitors annually.
